The following three topics can be combined in a two-day seminar
for advanced students of music performance. After introducing the
historical origins of current concepts in music and performance,
the practices of classical music and "historically informed"
performance are located in this context. These practices are then
set in the more recently defined framework of music as a dynamic
social process. Then, in an introduction to early recordings, students
apply the insights they have gained from the practice of recontextualization
to an experiment in listening practice. The seminar's goal is to
help students expand their listening habits and gain awareness and
control of their musical selves.
